Many parents have recently filed a Petition with the Bombay High Court, requesting filling of Vacant Positions in Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, so that it can begin considering Cases.
For nearly two years, the body has been effectively Non-Functional, with no one to hear Cases. The High Court has allowed the State Government two weeks to respond after the first hearing on February 28.
The Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act of 2005 established the commission to safeguard, promote, and defend children’s rights in the state.
The Commission, which is part of the State Women’s and Children’s Welfare Department, carries out a variety of tasks to guarantee that the Act’s standards for children are followed.
It is also responsible for considering Parental Grievance Petitions and even taking Suo Motu Cognizance of Activities or Behaviors that affect the Welfare of Children.
The Commission’s Five-Member Positions are now unfilled. Rubal Agarwal, Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Integrated Child Development Service Scheme (ICDS), was recently awarded additional duty of the chairmanship, which had been vacant since May 2020.
“Thanks to the apathy by the State Administration, many must have lost faith in the system and stopped approaching the commission.” Nitin Dalvi, another parent member of the organization, stated that the newest appointee to the position of chairperson is of little value because it is merely an extra cost.
