The Noida Authority informed the Supreme Court that the illegally built twin 40-storied towers of Real Estate developer Supertech in Noida will be demolished by May 22, 2022.
The Bench hearing the matter comprised Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant.
Senior Advocate Ravindra Kumar for Noida Authority stated, “I have placed the photographs to show that demolition work has started. I have fully complied with the directions of February 7.”
The Noida Authority and the Supertech were asked by the Court to comply with the timelines mentioned in the Authority’s Affidavit.
On February 7, 2022; the Supreme Court had issued directions that the demolition of the twin towers in Noida built by Supertech Ltd in violation of norms at its Emerald Court Project shall start within two weeks. It had directed Supertech to pay the refunds to all homebuyers by February 28, 2022.
On January 17, 2022; the Supreme Court asked Supertech to sign a Contract with the demolition agency, ‘Edifice’ within one week.
Earlier, Supertech was pulled up for non-compliance with the Court Orders of refunding homebuyers who had bought flats in Twin towers in Sector 93 in Noida. The Court warned that the Directors would be sent to Jail for “playing truant with the Court.”
On August 31, 2021; Supertech was directed by the Supreme Court to demolish the twin towers within 3 months. It also directed to Prosecute Noida Officials involved in approving the plan in violation of norms. It also asked to refund all the homebuyers with 12% interest.
However, Supertech had informed the Court that it needed more than the allotted time of 3 months for carrying out a safe demolition process.
The matter is listed for Hearing on May 17, 2022. The Authority is directed to present an updated Status Report at the next Hearing.
