The senior representatives of Google, Facebook, Twitter, PayTM and Amazon have been summoned to appear before a joint parliamentary committee to present their stand on the Data Protection Bill, 2019 on privacy issues after the Congress raised its concern on the matter.
According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat Notice, Facebook has been called on October 23 before BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi to make its presentation while Amazon and Twitter have to appear on October 28.
The Google and PayTM officials have to make their presentations on October 29 before the committee.
The Data Protection Bill, 2019 presented in the Parliament last year gives power to the government to ask questions to the these companies about the personal and non-personal data being on their platform.
The matter was brought before a joint Parliamentary Committee headed by Meenakshi Lekhi who said that, “Whosoever is required, an individual or an entity will be asked to depose before the panel on the issue of protection of data and its privacy and their respective social media platforms will be thoroughly examined by the panel”.
