The Supreme Court has granted protection from arrest to Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami in the Maharashtra Assembly privilege breach case. The court also issued a show-cause notice to the Secretary of the State Legislative Assembly for warning the petitioner against disclosing house notice to the court.
The bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian also gave two weeks to the Maharashtra Assembly Secretary to explain as to why he should be exempted from contempt of court.
The bench said, “The intention of the author of the letter seems to be to intimidate the petitioner because he approached this court and to threaten him with a penalty for doing so.”
The bench said this while hearing the plea filed by Goswami against the show-cause notice issued by the State Legislative Assembly on the anchor’s reportage related to actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
The notice was issued by the Assembly to Goswami for his remarks made against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey in his TV debate.
