In this incident both India and Bangladesh shocked, Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar, who arrived in Kolkata for medical treatment on May 12, has been found murdered. The MP, last seen at a high-end apartment complex in New Town, was likely skinned, chopped up, and his body parts dispersed across the city.

Arrest and Confession

Kolkata police have made significant progress in the case with the arrest of Jihad Hawladar, an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant. Hawladar has confessed to his involvement in the murder and dismemberment of Mr. Anar. His confession has led to the identification of at least four other suspects, including Akhtaruzzaman, a Bangladeshi-origin US citizen, who may have orchestrated the murder and allegedly paid ₹5 crore to the killers.

Honey Trap Theory

Investigations suggest that Mr. Anar was lured into a “honey trap” by Shilasti Rahman, a woman believed to be acquainted with the killers. Dhaka police have detained Rahman, suspecting she played a pivotal role in enticing the MP to the flat where he met his end. CCTV footage corroborates this theory, showing Mr. Anar entering the apartment with a woman.

Details of the Crime

According to Hawladar, the crime was meticulously planned. After killing Mr. Anar, the perpetrators skinned and dismembered his body to make identification impossible. The remains, including minced flesh and bones cut into small pieces, were packed into plastic bags and scattered across Kolkata. Some parts were reportedly stored in a refrigerator in the flat before disposal. CCTV footage captured one of the accused leaving the flat with a large suitcase, believed to contain body parts.

The Mastermind and Ongoing Investigation

Akhtaruzzaman, the suspected mastermind, remains at large, possibly in the United States. The flat where the murder occurred was rented to an acquaintance of Akhtaruzzaman by a state government employee. Police are now racing against time to apprehend all involved and piece together the full extent of the plot.

International Cooperation

The cross-border nature of the crime has necessitated cooperation between Kolkata and Dhaka police, who are jointly working to unravel the conspiracy and bring all perpetrators to justice. The investigation continues to uncover more details, with further arrests expected as the probe deepens.

This horrific case has not only highlighted severe security concerns but also the lengths to which criminal networks will go to execute their plans. The involvement of multiple parties and the gruesome method of disposal underscore the premeditated and cold-blooded nature of the crime.
