On Friday, the Supreme Court of India lashed out at a group of the farmers belonging to the Kisan Mahapanchayat.
The group was requesting the Court to give them permission to conduct a non-violent Satyagraha at Jantar Mantar in which around 200 farmers will participate.
A Bench comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar stated, “You have strangulated the entire city, now you want to come inside the city. The residents around, are they happy with the protest? This business should stop.”
The Court also asked the farmers to have faith in judiciary and let the matter be decided from the Court’s end.
“If you have faith in courts, pursue that for urgent hearing instead of protesting. Are you protesting against the judicial system also?” questioned the Court.
Adding to it, the Court stated, “You block highways and then say protest is peaceful. Citizens also have their rights to move around. Their properties are being damaged. You are affecting security also. You stopped defence personnel also.”
In response of this, Ajay Choudhary who was representing Kisan Mahapanchayat stated that no single person of this group is a part of that protest that has blocked the highways.
Adding to it, he also stated that it is the Police who have blocked the highways and also accused the Police of wrongfully detaining them.
The Court after observing this asked the group to file an Affidavit stating the same.
Earlier, in the month of July, two other groups of farmers, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) conducted a protest at Jantar Mantar.
It should be noted that even after 11 rounds of talks between Government and farmers, there has not been any conclusion and the farmers have been protesting for over a year at Delhi’s borders.
