The Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) asked the Assam Government to take appropriate steps against illegal construction as it violates the 2019 Apex Court Order in the eight identified wildlife corridors of the Kaziranga National Park and tiger reserve.
CEC member secretary Amarnath Shetty asked Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua to submit an action report to the panel within four weeks.
The development took place after the CEC received a letter from Hemen Hazarika, Scientist and Head of the Guwahati-based integrated regional office of the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, which included an inspection report on the violation of April 12, 2019, Supreme Court Order.
The said report mentioned that there has been a gross violation of the Apex Court Orders and noted that the illegal construction has to be demolished, whether it is just a small Dhaba, concrete house, or restaurant.
The Supreme Court-appointed panel urged that the Assam Government notify all nine identified animal corridors and said there should be connectivity during seasonal movement of animals, hence 44.205 Km would be ideal instead of the approved 37.48 Km.
