Modi Surname Defamation Case: Rahul Gandhi appears before Surat Court over his remark

Queency Jain –

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has appeared before a Magistrate Court in Surat in order to record his statement over a defamation case filed against him by the Gujarat MLA Purnesh Modi after the former’s remark on surname Modi.

The statement was recorded after the MLA Purnesh Modi filed a defamation suit against Gandhi under Section 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code in April 2019.

Surat’s Chief Judicial Magistrate A.N. Dave had earlier ordered Gandhi to remain present and record his statement in relation to the defamation suit on 24 June.

The Complaint was filed back in 2019 after Gandhi, in his rally in Kolar at Karnataka passed a derogatory statement by saying, “Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi…how come they all have Modi as the common surname? How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

Earlier, Gandhi had pleaded not to be guilty on his remark back in 2019 when he was the Congress President.
