The High Court of Kerala today granted Bail to the second accused in the Gold Smuggling Attempt Case, Arjun Ayanki.
The Bail was granted under stringent conditions one of them being to surrender his passport.
The Bail plea was allowed by Justice Shircy V. An attempt to smuggle 2.3 kgs gold through a carrier at the Karipur Airport was made by this group of individuals.
The first accused in this matter was already released earlier on Bail.
Advocate Thoshin VS argued that the accused should be granted Bail only with stringent conditions.
The Court then directed that the accused should not leave the State without permission.
Earlier the Customs had requested a Special Court for economic offences to extend the accuser’s custody period but the Court had rejected it. The Customs Department then challenged the Court’s decision.
The customs officials on 21st June had seized 2.3 kilograms of gold from a person named Mohammed Shafeeque Melethil from the Karipur airport.
On the same day, five individuals met with a road accident at the Kozhikode District.
According to the reports, the accident occurred because the deceased individuals were chasing the members of a rival gang whom they thought possessed the gold by acquiring it from Mohammed Shafeeque Melethil.
These individuals were unaware of the arrest of that person.
The Customs Department also found proof that Arjun Ayanki had links with Mohammed Shafeeque. The latter stated that the accused was waiting for him outside the airport.
