An Attorney who submitted two applications requesting euthanasia for his clients, claiming that the State Authorities were ignoring them and that they should be allowed to commit suicide instead, was fined Rs 10,000 by the Gujarat High Court.
Both petitions claimed to be battling corruption in the Gujarat State Transport Corporation, with one on behalf of 600 members of a fishing community and the other on behalf of an individual who claimed to be doing so ineffectively.
According to the Times of India, Justice A.S. Supehia expressed his displeasure with attorney Dharmesh Gujarat for submitting these petitions and issued a punishment of Rs 5,000 each case.
According to the judge, the cases were pointless wastes of time for the court, registry, and government attorneys. The court was also cited as noting that the advocate had let down his clients by failing to grasp the euthanasia issue. It further criticized the petition for failing to reference any legal provision.
According to the publication, Gujarat requested that his clients receive the fine in his place so as to protect his professional reputation. The judge declined to do so.
