The Indian government is actively seeking ideas to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for future e-governance models, with a focus on scaling up AI-backed face authentication and enhancing e-service delivery to citizens.
The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) recently collaborated with approximately 15 domain experts from firms such as EY and PwC to brainstorm and plan for technological shifts.
Proposals include using AI for timely cataract diagnosis through a smartphone app, automated grain quality assessment for farmers, generative AI-based citizen engagement on WhatsApp, and AI applications in road construction monitoring and tourism.
Experts from PwC have suggested leveraging AI to identify crop pests and diseases for personalized farming advice. KPMG proposed using generative AI for personalized student attention based on academic records and test scores, addressing learning gaps and failure rates.
Deloitte emphasized AI applications in automating the drawing up of Request for Proposals (RFPs), contracts, and policy documents, while EY suggested using Natural Language Processing for grievance redressal mechanisms in multiple languages with audio-visual elements.
The government is keen on staying updated on technological advancements and consulting domain experts to meet the increasing demand for scaling up e-services.
The collaboration with experts aims to incorporate AI solutions into various aspects of governance, including security, cross-border collaboration, and data assessment for defense and security decisions.
Additionally, the experts have proposed a ‘Virtual Public Servant’ for personalized citizen engagement using natural language processing and data from various government sources across departments.
