The Calcutta High Court has asserted that every citizen of India takes pride in the tricolor flag.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, in a recent order, highlighted the significance of promoting respect and dignity for the national flag, considering it as a means to build national identity, unity, and a patriotic gesture.

The Court stressed that the police have a “bounden duty” to support and encourage Tiranga Rallies, emphasizing that the decision is not influenced by the political affiliation of the rally organizer.

The remarks were part of the disposal of a plea filed by Sanjib Sau, who sought permission for a Tiranga Rally with over 3,000 participants on Republic Day. The Court, rejecting concerns about public inconvenience or disturbance, emphasized that rallies are commonplace in the state, and citizens are accustomed to such events.

While granting permission, the Court directed the petitioner to ensure that no emergency services are obstructed during the rally.
