The Delhi High Court has requested a status report from Tihar Jail Authorities and Delhi Police in a plea concerning the alleged murder of prisoner Ankit Gujjar, a 29-year old gangster, inside Tihar Jail earlier this month.
The petition seeks the transfer of the investigation from Delhi Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and adequate, round-the-clock security for family members.
In plea alleged that Gujjar was being harassed by the Jail officials as he was unable to meet their regularly increasing demands for money and was murdered as a part of pre-planned conspiracy.
The plea states, “The brutality meted out to the deceased as evidenced from the photographs of his corpse, coupled with the fact that he was left to die in a solitary cell without any medical attention whatsoever, renders to the present case a colour of the rarest of rare category.”
The petition states that although an First Information Report (FIR) was lodged in response to a Magistrate’s order but a fair probe by a neutral agency would inevitably lead to invocation of not only further provisions under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) but also special laws such as the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act, Prevention of Corruption Act, and Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Four officials were also suspended by the DGP in connection with the incident, including Deputy Superintendent, two Assistant Superintendents and one Warden.
