In order to understand the phenomenon of drop-in medical admissions of Government school students in Tamil Nadu since the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the Communist Party of India (Marxist)/ CPI (M) has submitted a plea before the Madras High Court.

The CPI (M) submitted that, before the introduction of NEET, 90% of the admissions in the State’s Government medical colleges were from Government schools.

“After the introduction of NEET, the number of government school students securing government seats in medical colleges dropped to a paltry five in 2017, seven in 2018 and zero in 2019,” the plea states.

For impleading the petition filed by Karu Nagarajan, the State General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the CPI (M) made its move through a plea in the Madras High Court.

The petition moved by the Minister of BJP challenged the constitution of the 9-member committee under the ruling of DMK Government for studying the impact of NEET on socially deprived students of Government schools.

The division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy agreed to hear the impleading petitions, where, along with CPI (M), many other parties sought for response in the matter including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kalagam (MDMK).

The next hearing on the matter will be held on July 13.
