All Bar associations in Delhi, with the exception of one, have signaled their agreement for the implementation of uniform elections across the capital on the same day.
The Delhi High Court Bar Association, which had initially expressed dissent towards the proposal, conveyed to the Court on November 17 that it has now accepted the idea in principle.
The disclosure was made before a bench comprising Justice Manmohan, Justice Rajiv Shakdher, and Justice Suresh Kumar Kait. While confirming their agreement, the Delhi High Court Bar Association also expressed a desire to put forth suggestions concerning the procedural aspects of conducting these elections.
The Court took note of the Tis Hazari Bar Association’s statement, indicating a reconsideration of its stance on uniform elections. The Court directed that the matter be listed for a comprehensive hearing and resolution on December 4, 2023, at 2:30 p.m., with any interim orders remaining in effect until then.
The High Court, operating with a full bench, has been actively addressing the issue of implementing a uniform election system for all Bar Associations on the same day.
In a previous update on November 3, it was communicated to the Court that, excluding the Tis Hazari Bar Association and the Delhi High Court Bar Association, all other Bar Associations had voiced their approval for a unified election process.
In response, the High Court had mandated a meeting involving representatives from each Bar Association, a representative from the Bar Council of Delhi, and the Chairman of the Coordination Committee for the District Courts Bar Association to collaboratively address the matter.
Subsequently, the Delhi High Court Bar Association reversed its stance and informed the Court of its agreement on November 17.
The Court is set to reconvene on December 4 to finalize the case’s disposition.
