Lozan Panov, the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Cassation, enters the race for President as an Independent candidate.
An Initiative Committee will nominate him as an Independent candidate, but the main driving force behind Panov is the civil initiative “Justice for Everyone”.
Judge Panov stated, “My cause has always been the independence of the judiciary. I will appeal to all free citizens to support me because I would like to be the next president to sign or not to sign the decree appointing the new President of the Supreme Court of Cassation.”
Panov has emerged as a key figure in the opposition to attempts to politicise the Courts, and is primarily supported by liberal centre-right circles. The Democratic Bulgaria Coalition, which is centred on the right, is expected to back him up.
For over eight years, this Civic nitiative has advocated for radical reform of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Courts to ensure Independence from Political Interference.
Panov’s tenure as Court Chairman is set to end on February 10, and the Supreme Judicial Council has already begun the process of selecting his successor.
On the other hand, Rumen Radev, the Incumbent President, is considered a favourite in the forthcoming elections by many major parties.
