BACKGROUND –
Prahlad Balacharya Gajendragadkar was the 7th Chief Justice of India, who served from February 1964 to March 1966.
Balacharya Prahlad Gajendragadkar was born to Gajendragadkar Balacharya in Satara, Bombay Presidency, into the Deshastha Madhva Brahmin family. Gajendragadkar’s family moved to Satara from Gajendragad, a town in Karnataka’s Dharwad district.
Gajendragadkar’s father, P. B. Gajendragadkar, was a Sanskrit scholar. He travelled to Mumbai with his older brother Ashvathama-Acharys, carrying the Gajendragadkar Nyaya (Law) culture to the western world.
He gained a reputation for scholarship after publishing a critical edition of the classic ‘Dattaka Mimamsa.’ He rose to become the undisputed king of the Bombay Bar, renowned for his investigative abilities and legal skills.
