BACKGROUND –
Indira Jaising is a prominent legal activist of human rights and the first woman to be appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India.
Indira was born in Mumbai, though her mother was from Karachi and her father from Shikarpur. She pursued her Bachelor in Arts from Bangalore University and later her LLM from University of Bombay.
CAREER TIMELINE –
1962- Enrolled as an advocate and started legal practice.
1981- Started an NGO named Lawyers Collective with her husband, Anand Grover.
1986- Appointed as the Senior Advocate by the High Court of Bombay.
2009- Promoted to the position of the Additional Solicitor General of India
LANDMARK JUDGEMENTS-
Rupan Deol Bajaj vs KPS Gill- The case was about KPS Gill who was the then Director General of Police, Punjab and was accused of molestation of Rupan Deol Bajaj who was an officer of the Indian Administrative Service, Punjab Cadre. The court declared that the KPS Gill was to be charged with offences under Section 354 and 509 IPC and would require to be in probation along with the payment of a fine of Rs. 2,00,000. As Rupan Bajaj had declined to accept the monetary compensation, the said fine was distributed to women organisations.
CONTROVERSIES-
The NGO started by her, named Lawyers Collective was barred by the Ministry of Home Affairs due to the allegation of receiving foreign funds in 2014. It then had their license suspended for violating the norms regarding foreign funding. During this time, the NGO offices and the home of Indira Jaising were also raided.
In 2020 she was also caught in a controversy when she suggested the mother of the victim of the Delhi Gang Rape to forgive the 4 rape convicts.
