BACKGROUND – Sharma is the Chief Minister of Assam and a member of the BJP. He is also appointed as convener of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
He was born in Assam where he pursued his education and further studies in guwahati. In his college years, he was elected as the general secretary of Cotton College Student’s Union.
MAJOR INITIATIVES- One of the major initiatives undertaken by the Assam Government under Himanta Sarma was the abolishing of the interview system of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Around 50,000 teachers were appointed and the education department developed in the state.

CONTROVERSIES/CASES- Sarma was arrested by chandmari police in for being a part of the case related to Biswa that was in relation to “promoting enmity.” It was suspected that Biswa’s posts related to the supporters of AIUDF shouting slogan for Pakistan were posts of misinformation and intended to cause public disorder. The case diaries of the matter got lost and the diaries that was later made were not adequate enough which led to him being released as innocent.
