B.S. Yediyurappa is the 19th and current Chief Minister of Karnataka. He is a member of Bharatiya Janta Party since 1975.
BACKGROUND – Yeddyurappa was born on 27 February 1943 in a village called Bookanakere in K.R.Pet taluk of Mandya district. His parents were Siddalingappa and Puttathayamma. He was named after the presiding deity of a Shaivite temple built by the great saint Siddalingeshwara at Yediyur in Tumkuru district.His mother died when he was four. He completed his Pre-University College education from Government college, Mandya (Mysore University)- 1960–61.
He belongs to Banajiga sub-sect of Lingayat community. In 1965, he was appointed as a first-division clerk in the social welfare department but he quit the job and moved on to Shikaripura where he joined as a clerk at Veerabhadra Shastri’s Shankara rice mill. In 1967, Yediyurappa married Mythradevi, daughter of the rice mill owner. He later set up a hardware shop in Shimoga.
Yediyurappa has two sons, Raghavendra, B.Y Vijayendra and three daughters, Arunadevi, Padmavati and Umadevi. In 2004, his wife died after falling into a sump while drawing water. In 2007, he changed the spelling of his name to Yeddyurappa from the earlier Yediyurappa following the advice of his astrologers, to change back again to Yediyurappa before oath taking ceremony on 26 July 2019. He is a proud follower of Basavanna. In 2020 he was infected by the COVID-19 virus but recovered soon afterwards.
UPBRINGING & EDUCATION – B S Yeddyurappa was born in Mandya on May 27, 1943, to Late Smt. Puttatayamma and Late Shri Siddalingappa. Born in a village named Bookanakere, he went onto to complete his Pre-University College from PES College, Mandya, where he got associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Yeddyurappa remained dedicated towards the RSS cause even though he started working as a clerk, firstly with Social Welfare Department, secondly, with Veerabhadra Shastri’s Shankar rice mill. He got married to Mythradevi, the daughter of the rice mill’s owner.
POLITICAL CAREER – B.S. Yediyurappa started his career as a member of the Shikaripura Town Municipality. In 1975, he was elected as the President of the Taluk unit of the Jana Sangh and appointed as the President of the Town Municipality of Shikaripura. Thereafter, he became the President of the Shikaripura unit of the BJP. He was elected as the President of the Karnataka BJP in 1988.
In 1994, he became the leader of opposition of Karnataka Legislative assembly. In 2004, he was re-elected and became the leader of opposition again. In 2008, he became the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
However, he resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka after corruption charges and pressure from the BJP in 2011.Resulting he resigned from the BJP and formed his party, the Karnataka Janata Paksha. In 2014, he merged his party with the BJP. Again in 2018, he took oath as the Karnataka CM, but had to resign just after 2 days as he lost the trust vote. Then finally, he held the office of Chief Minister of Karnataka on 26 July 2019.
MAJOR INITIATIVES TAKEN-
- Bengaluru model of development of citizen centric initiative.
- ‘Mission Bengaluru 2022,’ an initiative aimed at revamping amenities and infrastructure across the state capital. The mission has been chalked out after the governmental analysis of challenges faced by the citizens and make the city of Bengaluru the best.
CAREER TIMELINE –
1983 – He won the assembly elections from Shikaripur constituency where he defeated Yenkatappa of INC with 64.20% vote share.
1985 – Re-elected for a second term by defeating M. Patil with am 53.52% vote share.
1989 – Re-elected for a third term where he defeated Nagaraja Mahadevappa of INC with a 41.42% vote share
1994 – Re-elected for a fifth term where he once again defeated Nagaraja Mahadevappa with a 50.13% vote share. However, he lost the 1999 assembly election to Mahalingappa of INC.
2004 – Re-elected for a sixth term in the assembly elections by defeating Shekarappa of INC by a margin of 19760 votes.
2007- Elected as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. However, he had to resign after two weeks.
2008 – Elected as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
2008 – Re-elected for a seventh term in the assembly elections from Shikaripur constituency by defeating former CM Bangarappa by a margin of 45000 votes.
2014 – Elected to 16th Lok Sabha elections from Shimoga constituency where he secured 606216 votes.
2018 – Re-elected as the CM of Karnataka for the third time. However, he was forced to render in his resignation merely two days after he was sworn into office for failing to secure sufficient support for his nomination.
2019 – When BJP bought down the Congress-JD-(S) coalition government, B.S Yeddyurappa was sworn in as Chief Minister of Karnataka for a fourth term
CONTROVERSIES –
1. In 2004, there were rumours that B.S Yediyurappa and Shobha Karandlaje (Lok Sabha MP; BJP) had an affair.
2. In 2009, the district magistrate ordered a probe to investigate the death of his wife. Many people alleged that she might have been killed; as the death was very suspicious.
His wife’s death was caused by slipping in a water tank and drowning. Many people raised questions that even though Mythra was 5 feet and five inches tall, how could she have drowned in a tank with only 4 feet of water.
3. In 2011, he was forced by the BJP to resign as the CM; due to corruption charges.
4. In April 2016, he was criticized when an SUV was gifted to him by a sugar baron, Murugesh Nirani. The SUV was worth 1 crore INR, and it was being used by him to inspect the drought-hit areas.
5. In May 2017, he was heavily criticized when he went for a meal at a Dalit house, but allegedly, he ordered food from a nearby hotel.
