Arjun Ram Meghwal, who unexpectedly took over as the Union Law Minister, has dismissed any suggestion that his predecessor’s strained relationship with the judiciary led to the unexpected reshuffle.
Mr. Meghwal expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for entrusting him with the position and emphasized his commitment to working in accordance with the constitution.
When asked if he believed that Kiren Rijiju’s sudden transfer was a consequence of his recent conflicts with the judiciary, Mr. Meghwal responded with a clear denial, stating that it was not the case at all.
The Minister of State in charge of Parliamentary Affairs, who has now been given independent charge of the Law Ministry, has also refuted any connection between his appointment and the upcoming elections in his home state of Rajasthan later this year.
He reassured that the executive and the judiciary maintain a cordial relationship, which will continue to be based on mutual respect and adherence to constitutional principles.
Mr. Meghwal affirmed that the boundaries between the two branches of government are well-defined.
Meanwhile, Mr. Rijiju, known for his significant role in the government and as a troubleshooter, has been shifted to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, a relatively less prominent position, despite being promoted to the Law Ministry with cabinet status less than a year ago.
This change occurs during a time when the government and the Supreme Court have experienced differences of opinion on the issue of judicial appointments.
