Atia Sabri has reportedly won her personal struggle in a family court in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh against the regressive practise of triple talaq.
Atia Sabri, one of the six petitioners in the Supreme Court against instant triple talaq, has been ordered by a family court in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, to pay her alimony of Rs 21,000 per month.
The court also directed Atia’s husband, Wajid Ali, to pay her an arrear of Rs 13.4 lakh, given the fact that the case was filed five years earlier. The couple has two daughters.
After giving birth to her second daughter in 2015, Atia said that her husband and in-laws pushed her out of the home. She had also accused them of demanding a dowry of Rs 20 lakh.
On November 24, 2015, Atia filed a complaint in Saharanpur court after Ali gave her triple talaq by writing the word “talaq” three times in a letter on November 2, 2015.
Atia expressed her feelings after the verdict and told the media that she is overjoyed by the decision and hopes that more women who have been harassed can come forward. She went on to say that she considers herself fortunate that God chose her for “the fight for the triple talaq law” or for “winning this alimony case.”
Lastly, Sabri praised the Supreme Court for putting an end to the 14,000-year- old evil practise and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for empowering Muslim women by banning it by legislation.
