A confrontation at the Tis Hazari court premises on Saturday escalated into a scuffle between a family of three, including a 70-year-old woman, and their proxy lawyer, prompting police to register three separate FIRs.
According to police, the incident occurred between 11:03 am and 11:06 am. “Three PCR calls were received regarding the altercation,” an officer said. When staff from the Tis Hazari court police post arrived, they allegedly found a group of lawyers manhandling members of the family. Both sides were taken to the police post for inquiry.
Police said the complainant had arrived at the court with his sister and elderly mother for a case hearing. Their proxy lawyer—who was carrying the case files—also accompanied them. A proxy lawyer typically represents a party in court when the main counsel is unavailable.
The dispute reportedly began when the man demanded the case files from the proxy lawyer, who allegedly refused to hand them over. The man later claimed that other lawyers intervened and manhandled him and his family, including his mother.
Accounts from the PCR calls, however, pointed to conflicting narratives. The first caller alleged that the proxy lawyer assaulted the family, while the second said it was the lawyer who was attacked. A third call came from a woman lawyer who alleged that, when she tried to intervene, the family assaulted her and snatched her gold chain.
Based on the statements of the proxy lawyer and the woman lawyer, two FIRs were lodged against the man and his relatives. A third FIR was registered on the basis of handwritten complaints from the family, who are currently receiving medical treatment, police said. All three FIRs were filed at the Sabzi Mandi police station.
A purported video of the incident shows a group of lawyers trying to drag and assault a man, as an elderly woman appears to shield him.
