The Supreme Court today put its order of the Justice Lokur Committee for keeping a check on stubble burning at abeyance after the Central Government informed that legislation might be passed to tackle the problem of air pollution.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Court that a law on “Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas” is under consideration and if the law is made, then a permanent body shall be instituted to look into issues of stubble burning.
He also said that the proposal shall be put before the Court in a matter of days and the Justice Lokur committee order should be put aside for now.
Counsel for the Petitioner, Senior Advocate Vikas Singh argued that there is no reason why the Committee should not do its work for the time being. Even if the law is drafted now, it would be a year until it is enforced.
To this the SG replied that the draft will be ready soon and implemented immediately as well.
The Supreme Court had recently passed an order appointing a one-man committee of Former Justice Lokur to look into the issues of stubble burning in various states.
