In a significant development in the fight against corruption, former Supreme Court judge Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar has been appointed as the Chairperson of the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal. The long-awaited appointment fills a crucial vacancy that had persisted for nearly two years.
Khanwilkar’s selection for the prestigious role came after extensive deliberations by a high-level committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. His esteemed judicial background and commitment to upholding justice were pivotal factors in his election to this vital position.
The Lokpal, tasked with ensuring transparency and accountability in public administration, had been operating without a permanent chief since the conclusion of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose’s term on May 27, 2022. Khanwilkar’s appointment heralds a new era of robust anti-corruption efforts, reinforcing the nation’s resolve to combat malfeasance at all levels of governance.
As Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar assumes the mantle of Lokpal Chairperson, expectations are high for decisive action against corruption and the promotion of ethical conduct in public service. His stewardship is poised to strengthen the institution’s mandate and restore public trust in the integrity of India’s governance mechanisms.
