The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has once again summoned Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal in connection with a money laundering probe linked to irregularities in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 case. This marks the ninth summons issued to Kejriwal, compelling him to join the investigation on March 21.
Kejriwal, who previously skipped the eighth summons on March 4, appeared before the Rouse Avenue Court physically on Saturday, a move that follows the agency’s filing of two complaints against him for non-compliance with previous summonses related to the Delhi excise policy case. The court subsequently granted him bail, emphasizing the necessity for Kejriwal to adhere to legal obligations, highlighting the significance of upholding constitutional duties.
Despite facing repeated summons, Kejriwal has maintained his stance, terming the summonses “illegal and politically motivated.” The ED seeks to record Kejriwal’s statement on various aspects of the excise policy, including its formulation, pre-finalization meetings, and allegations of bribery.
The case against Kejriwal and other AAP members stems from allegations of irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi excise policy, leading to its withdrawal amid corruption allegations. The ED alleges that kickbacks worth Rs 45 crore generated through the policy were utilized for the AAP’s electoral campaign in Goa in 2022.
The excise policy aimed to rejuvenate Delhi’s liquor business, introducing reforms such as discounts and offers on liquor purchases. However, allegations of irregularities prompted an investigation, resulting in the policy’s cancellation. The AAP has accused officials, including former lieutenant governor Anil Baijal, of undermining the policy’s effectiveness.
Amid the ongoing probe, senior AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh have already faced legal consequences, with Sisodia arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Singh taken into custody by the ED earlier.
As the investigation unfolds, the scrutiny on Kejriwal and the AAP’s alleged involvement in the excise policy irregularities continues, highlighting the complex legal and political landscape surrounding the case.
