On 2nd November 2021, the Delhi Commission for Women took Suo Moto cognizance of media reports concerning rape threats against Indian Cricket Team Captain Virat Kohli’s 9-month-old daughter.
“This is a very serious matter and attracts immediate action,” the notice issued by DCW reads.
While taking cognizance of the matter, the DCW asked the Cyber Crime Cell for registering FIR against those who have posted rape threats online. Further, DCW Chairperson Swati Mahiwal has also asked for a copy of the FIR, details of the accused identified and arrested, and detailed action taken report by November 8 from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
The threat comes after the Indian cricket team suffered two successive defeats in the ongoing T20 World Cup series and Virat Kohli’s recent support for teammate Mohd. Shami, after being trolled online because of his religion after team India’s defeat in the India-Pakistan match on 24th October 2021.
“Attacking someone over their religion is the most pathetic thing one can do as a human. That is a very sacred and personal thing. People take out their frustration because they have no understanding of what we do,” said Virat Kolhi while addressing the issue.
