Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out searches on Saturday at several locations in Kolkata associated with Trinamool Congress leader and former MP Mahua Moitra. These raids are part of the ongoing investigation into the cash-for-query case.
Moitra, who previously represented West Bengal’s Krishnanagar constituency, faced expulsion from Parliament on December 8 following findings by the Lok Sabha’s Ethics Committee, which found her guilty of “unethical conduct” and “serious misdemeanours.” She was accused of allegedly soliciting cash and gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for raising questions in Parliament.
An official statement revealed that CBI teams conducted searches at various premises, including one in the Alipore area linked to Mahua Moitra. Sources indicate that the team visited the ‘Ratnavali’ building in Alipore, where Moitra’s father, D N Moitra, resides on the ninth floor.
Earlier this week, the Lokpal directed the CBI to investigate the allegations against Moitra and submit a comprehensive report within six months.
Despite the controversy surrounding her, the Trinamool Congress has nominated Moitra once again to contest from the Krishnanagar constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
The outcome of the CBI investigation and its implications on Moitra’s political career remain subjects of keen interest and speculation as the case unfolds.
