The Union Ministry of Health has informed the Supreme Court that a new Covid-19 vaccine, developed by Indian pharmaceutical company Zydus Cadila, for the 12-18 years age group will soon be available for vaccination.
Supreme Court was informed about the vaccine in a 375-page long affidavit filed by the Central Government in response to the questions asked by the Apex Court in its order dated 31 May in a suo moto case relating to Covid management of the country.
The Central Government informed the Supreme Court that while the government is keeping a check on its vaccination policy since May, it further aims to vaccinate all of its population by the end of December this year.
The Supreme Court was informed that the approximate population of above 18 years is around 93-94 crores which will require around 188 crores of vaccines. Though the government is making sure to keep vaccines available for all, it further stated that 10,000 crores, out of 35,000 crores kept for vaccination, has already been spent on the procurement of vaccines.
Though Justice DY Chandrachud had earlier termed the vaccination policy of the Government to be prima facie arbitrary and irrational, the Centre told the Supreme Court that they are working on their best to provide “safe and effective” vaccines to all age groups.
In conclusion, it was submitted that from 21 June, 2021 the Government will procure and supply vaccines to all States and Union Territories free of cost for 18-44 years age groups at the Government Covid Centres.
