Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered a spirited defense of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and India’s economic trajectory at the American Bar Association Spring Conference. Denouncing misconceptions surrounding the CAA, he emphasized its humanitarian aspect, providing refuge to persecuted individuals without depriving anyone of citizenship.
Addressing concerns, the Vice President clarified that the CAA’s 2014 cutoff date doesn’t invite newcomers but extends benefits to long-term residents. He underlined India’s tradition of offering sanctuary to persecuted communities and rebuffed attempts to lecture the nation on democracy without understanding its realities.
Highlighting India’s civilizational ethos, Dhankhar stressed its independence and robust democratic institutions. He encouraged youth to challenge misconceptions, particularly on social media, and engage in enlightening discussions.
Regarding India’s economic trajectory, the Vice President expressed dismay at pessimistic narratives from influential individuals and urged optimism and constructive dialogue. The event was attended by prominent figures including the Attorney General and Solicitor General of India, along with leaders from legal and advocacy organizations.
