As tensions between Ukraine and Russia rise, President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid has called for the use of “tools that we have to resolve disputes.”

The United Nations expressed worry on Wednesday about the escalating Ukraine-Russia tensions, urging all parties to intensify negotiations, de-escalate, and revert back to the trail of dialogue in order to save the people of Ukraine and even beyond from the scourge of war.

The recent developments in Ukraine, including reports of increased ceasefire violations across the contact line and the real risk of further escalation on the ground, are causing “grave concern,” according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

As tensions between Ukraine and Russia rise, President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid has called for the use of “tools that we have to resolve disputes.” He urged the parties to intensify their talks in order to de-escalate the current situation through dialogue.

He urged all parties to make full use of Article 33 of the Charter and its various instruments for pacific dispute resolution. He warned that if the conflict in Ukraine worsens, the world will be confronted with a scale and severity of need unseen in many years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees on Monday recognising Ukraine’s ‘Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics’ as ‘independent,’ escalating tensions in the region and raising fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. He also sent Russian troops into eastern Ukraine for what the Kremlin described as a “peacekeeping” mission in Moscow-backed areas.
