For the restoration of Civilian-led transition, the UN Security Council has called for an immediate release of Mali’s transitional President, Prime Minister and other officials arrested by the military.

The Council has urged the defense and the security forces to return to their barracks without any delay.

Col. Assimi Goita, leader of Mali’s 2020 coup, disposed the President and Prime Minister of transitional government in an unprecedented move and regained control of West African country.

While in detention, the President dismissed the Prime Minister and shortly after resigned himself.

15 Council members approved a statement affirming that imposition of a change of transitional leadership by force and force resignation is unacceptable.

The Council noted the risk of negative impact of such developments on ongoing efforts to counter terrorism, implement the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali thereby stabilizing the center of Mali.

Reiterating its strong support by the African Union and West African regional group (ECOWAS), the Council called on all Malian parties to continue cooperating fully with all partners so as to ensure resumption of the civilian-led transition.
