Former JNU’s student Umar Khalid’s lawyer today stated before the Delhi Court that the officer who drafted the accused’s charge sheet is communal and not his client.
Umar Khalid is said to be involved in the northeast Delhi Riots UAPA [Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act] case.
Senior Advocate Trideep Pais on behalf of his client Umar Khalid argued before the Court that the Chargesheet did not sound practical at all and was compared to a television script.
Mr Pais stated before the Court that the witness’s statements are fabricated and that they are ‘speaking in forked tongues’.
The Advocate also alleged that the witnesses have made different statements in different FIR’s.
Words like ‘Bharat ke tukde honge’ and ‘Umar Khalid a veteran of Sedition’ were used in the charge sheet.
Mr Pais further read out a portion from the Chargesheet which stated that “No amount of rhetoric and obfuscation of facts will be enough to brainwash the Indian Muslims into actually believing that CAA would question their nationality”.
To this, he submitted that it was obscure and the Police Officer has not stuck to the facts of the case and made the report by watching news channels.
“This type of statement shapes public opinion by being picked up by irresponsible media. No matter what Your Honour says today, public opinion is being shaped” ,stated Pais.
Senior Advocate also stated that the charge sheet goes on to paint Umar as communal.
After hearing the arguments raised by the Advocate on behalf of his client, the Court adjourned the hearing for today and held that the next hearing will take place on Monday.
