The Supreme Court refused to vacate the Interim Order passed by it to allow women candidates to appear for the National Defence Academy (NDA) examinations.
The Court rejected the request made by the Ministry of Defence to exempt NDA from the induction of women from the present entrance.
The Ministry of Defence stated that certain infrastructural and curriculum development is required to allow the induction of women and hence requested the time till May 2022 to allow women candidates to participate in NDA entrance.
The bench while hearing the submission made by Senior Advocate Chinmoy Pradip Sharma on behalf of the Petitioner Kush Kalra stated that the said issue cannot be postponed.
The Advocate on behalf of the Petitioner had propounded that two NDA exams are held in a year so allowing women to take the exam in 2022 would mean the admission will take place in 2023.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati submitted that a study group has been formed to examine the developmental changes which are required to be made to facilitate women’s entry and are expected to be put in place by May 2022.
Justice Kaul stated, “He has closely read the Affidavit Filed by the Ministry and has fully understood the challenges expressed by them. But having given hopes to the women through the Interim Order, the Court does not want to let them down.”
