The Supreme Court has agreed to list a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) filed by veteran Journalists N Ram and Sashi Kumar.
The PIL sought a probe by a Supreme Court sitting or retired Judge into the Pegasus spyware snooping row.
The PIL was presented by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal before the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana.
Mr Sibal contended that Pegasus spyware has a very widespread consequence, its consequences are not only in India but worldwide too.
Sibal further argued that this matter is urgent and has the utmost importance concerning national security, involving surveillance of opposition leaders, journalists and even the judiciary.
“This is an urgent matter. Making waves not just in India but internationally”, Sibal stated.
Validating the urgency to hear this matter, the CJI agreed to list the matter for the next week.
Additionally, the petitioner also wants the Court to give directions to the Union of India to reveal if any agency or government of India itself has obtained a license(s) for Pegasus spyware and/or used/employed it, either directly or indirectly, to conduct surveillance in any way.
