The Supreme Court of India has once again suspended the plea filed by self-styled god man Asaram Bapu, serving a life sentence for Rape of a minor girl.

The plea sought for the 2 weeks suspension of his sentence for pursuing the medical treatment.

The plea was dismissed by the Bench comprising Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice Bela M Trivedi, observing that, “Sorry in this sort of a situation, taking an overall view, it’s not an ordinary crime at all. You’ll get all your ayurvedic treatment in Jail. Continuing ayurvedic treatment is not a problem. We’ll direct the Jail authorities to take care that ayurvedic treatment is granted to you.”

Opposing the plea about improper medical treatment in the Jail and shifting Bapu to the Intensive Care Unit in Jodhpur, where he was treated for COVID-19, Senior Advocate Manish Singhvi submitted that he is getting best medical treatment in Jail and 6 weeks Bail is unnecessary.

Earlier also the plea for temporary suspension was filed by the counsels of Bapu. The Bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari issued a notice on June 4, agreed to examine the seriousness of petitioner’s condition.

On the basis of report submitted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences of Jodhpur upon Bapu’s better condition, the Court rejected to favor his plea, stating his excuses to escape the Prison.

The Court had also rejected the prayer to set up a medical facility at his Ashram in Pal Village, Jodhpur so as to provide him treatment, while noting that, “Whenever he had been taken out from prison even for attending the dates of hearing during the trial, his followers would form huge congregations which would create uncontrollable law and order situations.”
