On Friday, the Supreme Court denied self-described God man Asaram Bapu’s request for bail on medical grounds, his has alleged of raping a 16-year-old at his Chhindwara Ashram in Rajasthan in 2013.
The Apex Court noted that the trial in the matter was ongoing and scheduled a follow-up hearing for January.
The counsel for Asaram informed the court that the self-described God man was ageing and afflicted with various illness .
He said that the petitioner needed medical attention for his sick condition because he could not receive it while incarcerated. The lawyer continued by saying that trial is progressing slowly, it appeared as though it would go on forever.
Asaram was taken into custody by Jodhpur Police on August 31, 2013, at his Ashram.
He was given a life sentence on April 25, 2018, after being found guilty of raping a 16-year-old in his Chindwara-based Gurukul or Ashram by the Jodhpur Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe Court.
Along with Asaram, the two other defendants—Hostel Director Sharat and Hostel Warden Shilpi—also received 20-year prison terms for their roles in the case.
