In an affidavit filed in Jammu & Kashmir High Court, one of the two Sikh girls said that she converted her religion to Islam of her free will. The girl added she converted her religion to marry a Muslim youth.

Sikh Community in Jammu & Kashmir has protested after alleging that two Sikh girls were kidnapped, forcibly converted and married to men from Muslim Community in Srinagar.

One of the girls, 18, who dismissed the claim, stated that she is a major and decided with a sound mind. She aimed to prove that the present conversion is no violation of the law.

The girl added that she married a Muslim with her free will and fulfilled all the legal requirements of marriage. The Sikh girl alleged there is a life threat to her and her husband because she married him going against her family.

After hearing the girl, Court directed the police not to take any actions in the conduct of the case, if any registered.

All-Party Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina and Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (GPC) Budgam President Santpal Singh said: “The girls said they were talking of justice. How can an 18-year-old girl marry a 45-year-old man who already has three kids? It is unacceptable.”

Given this incident, both the presidents, Jagmohan Singh of APSCC and Santpal Singh of GPC, demanded that “A law should be introduced, banning all inter-faith marriages in J&K.”
