SC: Protection from Arrest to Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh

The Supreme Court granted protection from arrest to Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh in certain cases registered against him.

A Bench comprising of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh adjudicated the Court and directed Param Bir Singh to join the Investigationand meanwhile he will not be arrested.

Senior Advocate Puneet Bali representing Singh noted in the Court that, Singh apprehends threat to life from Mumbai Police if he steps foot in Maharashtra and should be granted Interim Protection. He has through his representative stated that, he is willing to participate in the investigation within 48 hours.

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul sternly interrogated “No protection, no hearing till we have the answer to the question – where are you?”

Earlier, a Court in Mumbai had announced Singh as offender since he did not appear for the Hearings despite several notices against him.

Param Bir Singh had written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray commenting on allegations of extortion and Corruption against Maharashtra Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh.

Protection was granted as the top court heard Singh’s Plea arguing the inquiries ordered against him were made by the persons who he had taken action against.

On September 16 the petition filed by Singh challenging two preliminary inquiries initiated against him by the Maharashtra Government dismissed by the Bombay High Court.
