On Tuesday, the Supreme Court censured Baba Ramdev for making remarks critical of allopathic medicine.
During a hearing on a case the Indian Medical Association filed to stop the “smear campaign” and defamatory commercials against the vaccination effort and modern medicines, a court chaired by the Chief Justice of India verbally scolded Ramdev.
CJI Ramana noted that Baba Ramdev’s popularized systems might not always function, and he added that,
“Whatever became of Bab Ramdev? He can make his system more well-known, so why should he criticize other systems? He popularized yoga, and while we all revere him, he shouldn’t criticize other ideologies. What guarantees does he offer that his systems will function? He cannot reject the medical system. He must refrain from misusing other systems.”
The union government, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Central Consumer Protection Authority of India, the Advertising Standards Council of India, and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. received notice from the bench, which was also made up of Justices Hima Kohli and CT Ravikumar (the company run by Ramdev).
Ramdev’s claim that US President Joe Biden contracted COVID despite receiving immunization caught the attention of the high court, which stated orally that it could potentially impact India’s “positive international ties.”
