An RTI query reveals that Uttar Pradesh, the largest sugarcane producing state, has no dues pending towards sugarcane farmers in the financial years 2018-19 and 2019-20.
The issue of farmer’s sugarcane dues is one of the major and recurring problems, particularly in Western Uttar Pradesh.
During the 2017 Uttar Pradesh election, the BJP manifesto had promised to deal with this issue and insured payment to sugarcane farmers within 14 days and to clear all dues within 120 days counting from the day when BJP comes into power.
The Supreme Court on August 4, 2021, sought the Centre and other eleven sugarcane producing states for their reply pertaining to this issue.
Meanwhile on July 7, 2021, the High Court of Allahabad had also sought a reply from the Uttar Pradesh government. The reply was sought in reference to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that claimed to get Rs 12,000 crore approximately in order to pay the sugarcane farmers of the State.
Simultaneously, there was a gap observed in the figure hence, a Right to Information (RTI) query was raised which clarified that all the dues were cleared.
