Disha, a Malappuram based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), moved to the Kerala High Court on Tuesday for the implementation of the Justice K Hema Commission’s suggestions to guarantee women’s Right to decent work environment in the film industry.
As per the Plea, the State is required by Law to safeguard the basic Human Rights of women working in the film industry and to make sure that they are not exposed to hostile behaviour and workplace harassment.
Advocate AK Preetha, who represented the Petitioners, stated that the committee submitted its report on December 31, 2019 and it was followed by a marathon Evidence gathering session.
The report advocated for Gender Equality and the safeguard of basic Human Rights, which included the Constitutional notions of equal pay for equal work and a safe workplace.
Subsequently, she stated that the Government’s inability to take steps to implement the suggestions was Unlawful.
As per the Plea, several female artists have reported Sexual Harassment to the committee.
It further added that the Government needs to Investigate the same and if an Offence is committed under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redress) Act, 2013, the State is Statutorily required to take necessary action.
