The Bench of Justice Jasmeet Singh has issued notice to file a response to Athletics Fedration of India (AFI), Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs including the Selection Committee of the AFI in the Petition filed by National High Jump record holder Tejaswin Shankar.
The Tejaswin Shanker had filed a Petition to challenge the decision of selection committee as he is not selected for the Commonwealth Games 2022 which are going to be held in Birmingham.
The Court directed the ASI to consider him and said the sole ground for his rejection in the selection should not be that he did not attend the interstate championship.
The Selectors didn’t select him citing the reason that he didn’t take part in the interstate championship although he had secured qualifying marks in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
The Tejaswin seeks from the Court to direct AFI to not disqualify him from Common Wealth Games 2022 due to his absence in the interstate championship and also sought that AFI should consider his marks he secured in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship and became qualified for Common Wealth Games.
The Court pointed out the achievements of Tejaswin and said that he is a medal prospect and so to satisfy the ego of some people he should not be restrained from participating the Common Wealth Game 2022 as it is the matter of country’s pride.
The Court observed, “These are record holders and you don’t let them go… He (Shankar) is a medal prospect. Let it not be an ego problem,”
The Counsel representing AFI and Selection Committee stated that list of names is already passed to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
