The Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered that if cricketer Yuvraj Singh is arrested after joining the investigation, he should be released on Interim Bail after posting bail and a surety bond.

A Bench of Justice Amol Rattan Singh stated, “It is made absolutely clear that if the SP has anything further to say on the issue, with regard to the phrase ‘formal arrest’ used by her in her affidavit, she would file another affidavit clarifying what she meant.”

Superintendent of Hansi Police claimed in the Affidavit given to the High Court that the accused used a caste term in an abusive and derogatory meaning, signifying a Scheduled Caste, resulting in the humiliation of people belonging to that caste.

The Affidavit reads, “The petitioner/accused is directed to appear before the Investigating Officer to effect his formal arrest in this case.”

Earlier, Senior Advocate Puneet Bali, appearing for Yuvraj Singh, had contended that the petitioner’s use of the word in question in the video recording of the conversation between him and his friend was not intended to incite feelings of enmity, hatred, or ill-will against members of the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes.

The Counsel further added that the word was used only in the context of an Inebriated Person (one who consumes bhang).

Currently, the High Court is hearing Yuvraj Singh’s petition seeking quashing of the FIR against him.

Yuvraj was booked under Sections 153 A, 153 B of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 3 (1) (u) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
