The Supreme Court of Pakistan has slammed the Imran Khan-led government over its failure to conduct Council of Common Interests (CCI) meetings. The government has been delaying the meeting for a significant time.
A two-member bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court consisting of Justices Qazi Faez Isa and Sardar Tariq expressed its dissatisfaction while hearing the local body election case.
The apex court was hearing against a fresh ordinance on delimitation of constituencies was issued by the Punjab Governor and was referred to the Chief Justice.
Justice Isa quoted the Election Commission and remarked,
“the entire Punjab Assembly was bypassed on the request of one individual, even as the Punjab government does not intend to conduct the local body elections”.
Emphasizing the importance of census report and on being apprised that no decision has been taken in the CCI, the Supreme Court reprimanded the Pakistan government,
“is it not the priority of the government to release the results of the census? Despite [the PTI having] government in three provinces, no decision is being taken in the council. Either the government is not capable of running the country or it is unable to make decisions”.
The additional attorney general (AAG) has submitted to the court that the CCI would conduct its meeting as
“it is a sensitive issue and the government wants to decide through consensus”.
He further asked why the CCI report had been kept confidential,
“are good deeds kept a secret? It raises questions”.
The Court also added that the people need to know what is going on at the center and provincial levels.
