A High Court in Pakistan allowed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) lifting ban from social media app TikTok.
The order was based on government officials’ statement that the company has agreed to work with them towards monitoring ‘immoral’ content.

The head of PTA during the hearing in a Peshawar court notified that the company has agreed to appoint a focal person for monitoring the content. ‘Immoral’ content as per the government includes nudity, obscenity and blasphemy.

Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court, Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan, remarked “When people realize the PTA will take action against them, they will no longer upload such videos”.

TikTok welcomed the court’s upliftment of ban and issued a statement, “We want to acknowledge Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s support and ongoing productive dialogue, and recognize their care for the digital experience of Pakistani users”.

The court had banned the social media app countrywide after a petition was filed alleging obscenity. PTA had also previously banned TikTok noticing the flow of obscene contents on the app but reversed their decision after company agreed to work towards moderating content in Pakistan.
