Orissa High Court directs e State Government to establish Complaints Box in all 87 Jails of Odisha till February 2, 2022, pertaining to the Nelson Mandela Rules adopted by the UN General Assembly.
The Two-Judge Bench of Chief Justice S Muralidhar and Justice A K Mohapatra passed a Notification while addressing the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Matters in Jails of Odisha.
Further the Bench noted that the Complaint/Suggestion Box will be opened only to the Secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), or a person authorised by the DLSA.
Furthermore, the Bench directed that the status of the action taken on the complaint should be presented by the Directorate of Prisons both to the Complainant as well as Secretary, DLSA within 10 days.
The Pronouncement was a part of a slew of Orders issued by the Orissa High Court for improving the condition of Jails and Prison inmates in Odisha.
The Orissa High Court further posted the matter to March 8, 2022 and directed the Director General (DG) Prisons to submit an Affidavit on the measures to be put in place for constructive reduction of Jail population, including the progress in adding to the capacity of overcrowded Jails.
