Actor Sushant Singh Rajput passed away on June 14, 2020, sparking a prolonged investigation following allegations of foul play by his family. In March this year, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a closure report in the case, giving a clean chit to Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty.
In a recent development, a Mumbai court has issued a notice to Rhea Chakraborty, seeking her response to the CBI’s closure report. According to PTI, earlier this month, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate R.D. Chavan of the Esplanade Court directed that notice be issued to the “original informant/victim/aggrieved person.” The court has granted time until August 12 for Chakraborty to respond, and proceedings have been postponed pending confirmation of her receipt of the notice.
The issuance of the notice is a procedural step that allows the complainant to challenge the investigating agency’s decision to close the case.
Chakraborty had earlier filed a complaint against Sushant Singh Rajput’s sisters—Priyanka Singh and Meetu Singh—and Dr. Tarun Nathu Ram, accusing them of facilitating the procurement of medication for the late actor using a forged prescription. She alleged that despite Rajput’s bipolar diagnosis and his tendency to discontinue medication, his sister arranged for psychotropic drugs through text messages. Her complaint led to the registration of an FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The court’s latest notice gives Chakraborty the opportunity to respond formally to the CBI’s findings.
