The Madras Bar Association (MBA), one of the oldest lawyers’ forums in the country, has formally appealed to the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, urging an augmentation in the representation of judges from the Madras High Court within the Supreme Court.
In a concise two-page communication, the association conveyed that its general body convened on November 22 and passed a resolution advocating an elevation in the presence of Madras High Court judges in the apex court.
Highlighting the Madras High Court as one of the three chartered high courts with one of the most extensive judges’ rosters nationwide, the association emphasized that historically, it had more than one judge concurrently serving in the Supreme Court.
“In the recent past, the Supreme Court had three judges from the Madras high court. But, at present, it has been reduced to one,” the communication stated.
Hence, the association contends that it is equitable and imperative for both the Madras Bar and the bench to be accorded proper representation in the Supreme Court, analogous to the representation enjoyed by the other chartered high courts of Bombay and Calcutta.
