On Tuesday, lawyers who practise before the High Court and the District Courts in Ernakulam
stayed home in support of the Kollam Bar Association’s ongoing demonstrations, leaving only
a few judges and court employees in the courtrooms at the Kerala High Court.
The Kollam Bar has been opposing the way that police handled a lawyer.
The Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association announced early this morning that its members will be skipping work today because the government has not yet taken any demonstrable action against corrupt police officers.
Advocate P. Jayakumar, a member of the Kollam Bar Association, is the subject of the controversy.
He is accused of experiencing violence while in police custody after being arrested in connection with a car accident.
Following the incident, some attorneys protested on the grounds of the District Court in Kollam, and on September 13 there was a violent altercation between attorneys and police.
Since then, the Kollam Bar Association’s members have stopped coming to work and are demanding that action be taken against the negligent police officers.
Over the past week, the protest has gained traction as more lawyers from the High Court have joined in with their absences from work.
Similar rallies by the KHCAA were also held in 2021 in response to the Senior Advocate B. Raman Pillai’s police summonses and the introduction of electronic filing, among other things.
